The Great Calling of Motherhood

Truth for Truckers”     *December 31, 2013*        Proverb 31
The Great Calling of Motherhood

As we continue our study concerning wives, husbands and the family this Proverb displays much truth concerning the virtuous woman/wife/mother. This woman is not only an older woman shown by the age of her husband who is known in the gates, when he sits among the elders of the land (v.23), but her children are mature enough to recognize her virtues for they as adults arise up and call her blessed (v.28). This older mother’s focus was upon her “household”/children.

Therefore, in the Bible, the doctrine concerning women/wives/mothers is determined by their age. The doctrine concerning younger women is found in the New Testament epistles and the older woman both here and in the New Testament epistles. This study is very important to Drivers because of the time they spend away from home and their families. But, it applies to all Christians because the foundation of all cultures, communities, churches and countries is the family, and the wife/mother plays a most significant role. So, we must realize and exalt the invaluable role of mothers

In fact the role of mother is the most important position in the family, for God specifically designed them to bring forth and train the next generation of godly men and women for His glory! The mother’s high and holy calling has been under attack in Western cultures which are the mainstay cultures that have sent out the Gospel for over two thousand years. Therefore, motherhood, in God’s eyes is a main priority for reaching those who are lost whom He so greatly loves, so much so that He sent His only Son to die for the redemption of ALL mankind. His great love demonstrated on the Cross of the Lord Jesus Christ, the most important event in human history, shows exactly how much He loves every soul who walks the face of the earth. And, the Gospel of God is the most important message man can hear and receive!

And, motherhood, according to Scripture is one of the keys to bringing men and women into the knowledge of the Truth, because God is counting on young women to embrace their calling as mothers and raise the next generation for His glory and the Gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ. It is true that “The hand that rocks the cradle rules the world” as recognized long ago in the 1850’s when this slogan was incorporated into a book.

This statement was published by a secular author who recognized the impact the person who raises a child has upon their future. The question today is: “Who is rocking your cradles?” God’s design is that mothers not only rock the cradle, but they should be the key person in the life of the infant, toddler, child, and young adult. But, the devil has his plan in place and he is working it out! His not so subtle but fierce attack is upon young women and motherhood.

Notice what God says about motherhood in I Timothy 2:13-15 “For Adam was first formed, then Eve. And Adam was not deceived, but the woman being deceived was in the transgression. Notwithstanding, she shall be saved [delivered] in childbearing, if they continue in faith and charity and holiness with sobriety.” This statement by Paul is not speaking of the woman’s eternal salvation of her soul. It is focusing upon the deliverance she will receive from the effects of the transgression which God brought about through the curse after the fall.

God pronounced a curse upon all three persons who were involved in the fall of man. And, the woman’s curse in part is: “Thy desire will be to thy husband, and he shall rule over thee” (Genesis 3:16). Her desires shall be subject to her husband, but she will receive deliverance from the stigma/negative effects which come naturally being under her husband’s authority if she follows through and embraces her calling as a Godly mother, bearing and raising her children for the Lord. However, the first part of the woman’s curse, sorrow in childbirth, is not referred to here as it still remains.

But, this deliverance frees her from the so-called bare-foot and pregnant syndrome thrown at young women in today’s “Liberated Women’s” culture which the devil has falsely imposed upon young women causing them to feel as though they are enslaved in a dead-end lifestyle if they follow the Biblical way by accepting their great calling of motherhood.

I Timothy 5:14 and Titus 2:4, 5 underline the importance and necessity of the young women’s calling. Throughout the ages, since the fall, God has given the Godly young woman a high and holy calling if they follow through just as Sarah did in her later years who also was delivered from this negative stigma for she called Abraham lord (I Peter 3:6)!

The Unloved Wife

Truth for Truckers *December 30, 2013* Proverb 30”The Unloved Wife”
“For three things the earth is disquieted [shaken] and for four which it cannot bear…for an odious [unloved] woman when she is married” (v.21-23). Our focus is upon the unloved married woman. Her husband does not show ‘agape’ love which is required by the Lord as commanded in Scripture. Ephesians 5:22ff is a passage that contains both the command to the wife to submit unto her own husband and the command to the husband to show active love to his wife, in the same way that Christ loves the church. This sacrificial love is necessary for the relationship to function properly and the onus in reality is written to men who are responsible for the leadership of the home, the community, the church and the country!

If this agape love is missing, if the husband does not fulfill his obligation to love his wife as his own flesh, then the relationship will fail. However, if the wife does not submit to his leadership the relationship will fail. It takes two, one flesh is how God describes this mysterious oneness as Paul calls it a mega-mystery that even he did not completely understand as he was not married, not involved in this one flesh mystery, but those who are can see the intimacy that brings about the spiritual and physical interaction when both husband and wife are saved fellowshiping in the Spirit!

So, this unloved wife in Proverb 30:23 is our topic for the day. Her condition ‘shakes the earth’ spiritually because it puts her in a very undesirable situation according to the Word of God. She is commanded to submit to a man who does not show the love that makes the relationship work the way God designed, and she does not enjoy the one flesh oneness which should give her the joy of being married to a husband that loves her unconditionally. But, she still must obey the command to submit to her husband in all things knowing that the Lord will bless her regardless of her husband’s response to her love for him,  for she is not only commanded to submit to his authority, but she is also commanded to love him.

This is exactly what my wife did for ten years, for she was saved for ten years before the Lord saved me in March 1980. Even though I lived the life of Jekyll and Hyde, a successful engineer by day and a wild Harley riding madman by night, she continued to pray for me knowing that the Lord told her I would be saved one day. Her submission and prayers for me brought about my salvation after living the life of a drug-abusing alcoholic husband and father for fifteen years.

So, Drivers, the Lord is speaking to each and every one of us to make sure that our families are in order so that we can be blessed of the Lord according to His precious Word! Husbands must be exercising agape love for their wives as is taught in Ephesians 5:22-31 which includes loving her as our own flesh, just as the Lord Jesus Christ loves the Church and gave Himself for it on the Cross of Calvary. His great love brought about our so great salvation and all the spiritual blessings (Ephesians 1-3) we enjoy as children of the King of kings and Lord of lords!

And, although wives are commanded to love their husbands on numerous occasions in the New Testament, the one-flesh union is the ultimate goal for both husband and wife in order that the family can enjoy the battle-ready position that the Lord desires. This puts the husband/wife into place for becoming the Spiritual force for propagating the Gospel! The husband as the leader of the family must take full responsibility for the Spiritual success of the family as he utilizes the weapons of our warfare in the ongoing battle for “Souls for Jesus” which is our continuing “Battle Cry”!

So, Drivers, let us band together as we look forward to serving the Lord as we witness to those the Lord sends our way and as we pray for the Lord’s will to be fulfilled in our ministries for Him! Husbands, love your wives…wives submit yourselves unto your own husbands…Proverbs 31-The Virtuous Woman is tomorrow’s topic!

Submisson and Service in the Home

Truth for Truckers *December 29, 2013* Proverb 29

He that being often reproved, hardens his neck, shall suddenly be destroyed, and that without remedy.” Once again the first verse of today’s Proverb is the focal point. And coupling this verse with yesterday’s topic of staying under God-ordained authority, the emphasis today is the believer that has been reproved/corrected by the Lord in times past concerning the same offense, but continues to go their way, disobeying the Lord’s commands in light of repeated offenses.

The offense that comes to mind concerns the first and most important authority structure God ordained and that is the husband-wife relationship. Actually, this is the second structure ordained, the first is man’s submission to God. The wife’s submission to their husband is the second: The word ‘submit’ means in battle ready position for spiritual warfare!
        1. Filled with the Spirit/Wives submit yourselves unto your own husbands as unto the Lord
           (Ephesians 5:18-22)
        2. Filled with the Word/Wives submit yourselves unto your own husbands as it is fit in the Lord
          (Colossians 3:16-18)
        3. Likewise ye wives be in subjection to your own husbands/Chaste conversation coupled with fear
           (I Peter 3:1ff)
        4. A meek and quiet spirit/Even as Sarah obeyed Abraham (I Peter 3:4-6)
        5. Sober, loving, discreet, chaste, good obedient to their own husbands (Titus 2:4ff)

If the believer obeys the first authority structure, submitting to God, then all of the other seven structures will fall into place automatically for in reality we are submitting to God if we submit to His ordained people/institutions. So, it is very simple to comply to His commands, even though it might appear complex at the outset, simplicity is always in Christ! But, as in all human relationships, the believer has an adversary and his name is Satan. He is ever in the midst of the home, the job, the highways etc. working full-time to defeat the believer. However, we have a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ through whom we must thank God for His unsearchable riches which can only be found in His precious Son.

The victory is already won if we “Crucify the flesh” and “Die daily” to our own desires putting on the whole armor of God as we go out into the battle-field day by day for it is only through the fleshly “Doorways  of the Devil” that the believer allows him to enter the fray. But, if we defeat him ahead of time each morning as we prepare for warfare/winning “Souls for Jesus” which is our “Battle Cry”, then he has no opportunity to enter in as we walk in the Holy Spirit with the King of kings and Lord of lords! This all sounds great, and it is possible, but conflicts do come, and the relationship of husband and wife which was Satan’s primary focus from the beginning continues to this day as we speak.

Listen, drivers, you know what I’m talking about. Many of you don’t see your wives/husbands for weeks at a time and this only adds to the problem of wives staying under the authority of husbands as the Lord designed in the Garden of Eden. And, it has not changed since (I Corinthians 11:3), even though our culture and many of the world’s cultures have been given over to the contrary, bringing about much confusion and chaos to the family, the community and the country.

So, where do we start? If we examine what the Lord has ordained, we find that He has put the wife in the same position as His Son the Lord Jesus Christ. The wife is submissive under the husband just as the Son is submissive to the Father. This places her in the exalted position of servant of God just like Jesus. She has the opportunity to receive great eternal reward by submitting to God’s will just like Jesus. She is the one that makes the relationship work as God designed, just like Jesus. She can obey or disobey, she is the one that as the saying goes: “There’s always a good woman behind a successful man.” What would have happened if Jesus decided to disobey His Father? Chaos and confusion and open rebellion in the spiritual realm…just like when Satan decided to rebel against God!!

This is what happens in essence when the wife decides to take charge and rebel against her husband…chaos, confusion, calamity in the family! So, as (v.1) of  our daily Proverb states, destruction [of the family] will come if these many reproofs to the wife are not heeded! The husband’s duty will be discussed in tomorrow’s Proverb of the day! Stay tuned in,  Driver, for the Lord’s message to you!

The One-Flesh Mega-Mystery

The One-Flesh Mega-Mystery

I. Institution of One Flesh/Marriage

Gen 2:21: And the LORD God caused a deep sleep to fall upon Adam, and he slept; and He took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh instead thereof;

Gen 2:22 And the rib, which the LORD God had taken from man, made He a woman, and brought her unto the man.
Gen 2:23 And Adam said, This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh: she shall be called
Woman, because she was taken out of Man.
Gen 2:24 Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh.

II. Instruction for One Flesh/Marriage

Mat 19:4 And He answered and said unto them, Have ye not read, that He which made them at the beginning made them male and female,

Mat 19:5 And said, For this cause shall a man leave father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife: and they twain shall be one flesh?

Mat 19:6 Wherefore they are no more twain, but one flesh. What therefore God hath joined together,
 let not man put asunder.

III. Intimacy of One Flesh/Marriage

Eph 5:22 Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord.
Eph 5:23 For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church: and He is the Saviour of the body.
Eph 5:24 Therefore, as the church is subject unto Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in
 every thing.
Eph 5:25 Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave Himself for it;
Eph 5:26 That He might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the Word,
Eph 5:27 That He might present it to Himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish.
Eph 5:28 So ought men to love their wives as their own bodies. He that loves his wife loves himself.
Eph 5:29 For no man ever yet hated his own flesh; but nourishes and cherishes it, even as the Lord
 the church:
Eph 5:30 For we are members of His body, of His flesh, and of His bones.
Eph 5:31 For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and shall be joined unto his wife, and they two shall be one flesh.
Eph 5:32 This is a great mystery [Mega-Mystery]: but I speak concerning Christ and the church.
Eph 5:33 Nevertheless let every one of you in particular so love his wife even as himself; and the wife
see that she reverence [fear] her husband.

Ephesians 5:32 records the only time the word Mystery is modified by the adjective Mega in the entire New Testament. Paul underlines the significance of the one-flesh union between husband and wife by utilizing this compound Greek term showing that God has given a special relationship between a man and his wife when the relationship is conducted in Biblical principle.

This requires the wife to realize her great opportunity of being in the position of servant under the authority of her husband just as the Lord Jesus Christ was Servant to the Father performing His will! Lest this may sound like 21st century male chauvinism, consider the relationship of Sarah and Abraham as described in I Peter 3:4-6:

“But let it be the hidden man of the heart, in that which is not corruptible, even the ornament of a meek and quiet spirit, which is in the sight of God of great price. For after this manner in the old time the holy women also, who trusted in God, adorned themselves, being in subjection unto their own husbands: Even as Sarah obeyed Abraham, calling Him lord[master]: whose daughters ye are, as long as ye do well, and are not afraid with any amazement [terror].”

Notice:
1.      The Attitude of Sarah: Meek and quiet, calling Abraham lord/master
2.      The Focus of Sarah: Trusting in God [Her faith was in God as she served God under her husband]
3.      The Actions of Sarah: Full submission to God under Abraham’s authority

Sarah exercising the Holy Spirit-filled attitude of meekness put her faith in God knowing that He was responsible for the results. Her trust was in God having experienced the loving leadership of her husband she understood that her attitude and actions were the key to fulfilling the will of God for their lives.

The wife having the position of influence has the greater opportunity for reward by serving God in faith, or serving herself in the flesh. Even though the husband has the position of God-given authority, the wife has the position of influence for as a servant she can make or break the relationship depending on how she decides to respond and conduct her life attitude/actions.

This is why Paul called the husband-wife relationship a Mega-Mystery! When there is intimate submission and love interacting between the two there is an intermingling abiding which provides great communion similar to the Father and the Son for as one-flesh their combined spiritual relationship affords great intimacy/insight into the kingdom of God as they serve one another doing the will of God!

The Lord opened my eyes to these truths over (28) years ago not long after I was saved. I was resting on the couch in the living room of our ‘cabin-home’ in the mountains of central PA, and, as I was communing with the Lord He began giving me answers to prayer through the conversation of my wife who was in the kitchen!

I was astounded as this continued for quite some time…I would pray having meditated on the Word of God asking for answers and at the very moment my wife Betsy would unknowingly respond with the answer…and all I could say as I laid there with my mouth wide open…It’s the Lord! She was providing immediate answers to prayer! Now that is a Mega-Mystery! One-flesh...One person...One unit working together!

I realize that one man’s experience does not prove very much to someone else, but, the Mega-Mystery the Apostle Paul spoke of here in Ephesians 5:32 definitely contains more than I can explain, and just as Paul inferred, this is something that he did not fully understand! Now Paul was not a married man so his understanding of this Mega-Mystery was limited as he described here in Ephesians.

Sarah and Abraham must have experienced this type of relationship which caused Sarah to recognize that God was actively working in and through them when she called Abraham ‘lord’. When seeking the Lord’s will the best person to listen to is your wife/husband…even if your one-flesh relationship does not appear to be producing supernatural results!

However, the power of love and submission between two God-ordained people is the key to realizing all that the Lord has in store for the husband and wife. This ‘great mystery’ can only be understood as the husband and wife are under the authority of our loving God and Savior the Lord Jesus Christ! It truly is amazing and most miraculous what submission to God’s ordained authority can do!
